The Pokemon Series Has Sold 279+ Million Units Worldwide

In a recent press release the Pokemon Company announced that the Pokemon games have sold over 279 million units globally since the franchise launched in Japan 20 years ago (This is as of February 29th 2016). The number also includes Pokemon spin-off titles such as the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. Though, the main series by itself has sold 201 million units. This includes the recently re-released Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.
