A Widespread Amount Of iPhone 6/Plus Are Losing Touch Functionality

According to iFixIt, who are reporting a widespread issue that’s killing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus’s that causes unresponsive touchscreen and a gray, flickering bar at the top of the display. Even though this issue is in the display and touchscreen, replacing those components won’t fix the problem. The gray bar eventually shows up on the new screen, because the problem isn’t the screen at all. It’s the 2 touchscreen controller chips on the logic board inside the phone. There are pages of complaints on Apple’s support forums on this issue, but at this point it appears that Apple doesn’t have a fix for the problem (Other than selling you another phone). iFixIt says Apple’s in-store repair techs aren’t equipped to make repairs to the logic board. Reportedly, third-party, “unauthorized” microsoldering specialists are able to replace the damaged chips. Check out iFixIt blog for a detailed.

UPDATE 8/29/16 - Todd Cleary of California, Jun Bai of Delaware, and Thomas Davidson of Pennsylvania are the named plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages, accusing Apple of fraud and violating California consumer protection laws. The three linked the problem to Apple's design decision to not use a metal shield or undersell to protect certain screen components as it did on versions of the iPhone 5.
Should you decide to look up the case, it's Davidson et al v. Apple Inc, US District Court, Northern District of California, No. 16-04942.
